Energy Efficiency & HERS Score Compliance
The updated stretch code requires new low-rise residential buildings to meet strict Home Energy Rating System (HERS) scores and commercial buildings to align with ENERGY STAR Multifamily New Construction (MFNC) standards. Nudura ICFs provide continuous insulation, reducing thermal bridging and significantly lowering energy demand.
Nudura ICF blocks consist of two layers of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam connected by recycled polypropylene webs.- Unlike traditional wood or steel framing, which allows heat to transfer through studs (thermal bridging), Nudura ICFs provide uninterrupted insulation across the entire wall surface.
- The airtight thermal envelope reduces heating and cooling loads, making it easier to reach the HERS 42-48 range.
- Commercial buildings using Nudura ICFs can easily meet or exceed the required 20% energy reduction compared to ASHRAE standards.
Lowering Embodied Carbon for Additional HERS Credit
The Embodied Carbon Credit allows builders to earn HERS credits by selecting materials with a lower carbon footprint. Nudura ICFs contribute to this by:
- Using recycled materials in their expanded polystyrene (EPS) forms.
- Reducing construction waste compared to traditional framing.
- Improving building longevity, reducing the need for replacements and repairs.
