Renovations and Additions to David Prouty High School in Spencer, MA Feature Nudura® Insulated Concrete Form Construction

Innovative ICF Construction Selected for 127,000 Square Foot Project

David Prouty High School is the first public school in Massachusetts constructed with insulated concrete form (ICF) walls.  Atlantic Builders Supply Northeast supplied 17 tractor-trailer loads of Nudura® ICF for the project.  Also supplied were PrebuckTM windows and parapet cap and Trempro below-grade waterproofing.

The school is a master plan of renovation and new construction.  Designed by Jones Whitsett Architects, the project calls for renovation of two existing buildings of the school, along with new construction for a total of 127,000 square feet of space. The new design creates more accessibility and brings the school into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. With the insulating properties of ICF, the design also brings energy performance up to today’s demanding standards and addresses green initiatives that allowed the school district to access grant money, in addition to the public funding allocated for the construction project.

General contractor, Fontaine Brothers, broke ground on the project September 8, 2023.  Construction is taking place in multiple phases to allow classes to continue while the project is under construction. The $112-million addition and renovation is expected to be complete in time for the 2026-27 academic year.

To ensure maximum energy efficiency, Nudura One Series forms with an 8”, 10” and 12” cores are being used for the project.  Core sizes are available from 4” to 12”.  The Nudura One Series also features the industry’s largest standard form on the market, 8’ (2.4m) long by 18” (457mm) high, allowing placement of 12 sq. ft. (1.11m2) of wall area in one building step. ICF construction helps meet stringent energy codes and results in highly durable, fire resistant, insulated concrete exterior walls that are structurally, acoustically and thermally superior to steel stud walls.

ICF construction increases energy efficiency, while producing a sturdy, durable, fire-resistant building.

In the early stages of construction, representatives of Atlantic Builders Supply were on site for six concrete pours.  According to Matt Doerfler, operations manager, “We’re on site at least two days a week.  We’re there to assist with technical questions and anything else that might come up on the jobsite.  We’ll be there as often as they need us to be there to ensure the success of the project.”

The addition will provide new classrooms, a gym, and administrative spaces, offering a dynamic mix of traditional and vocational instruction. The school district expects the project to result in a more sustainable, high performing, yet cost-effective building
